My name is Karen Whitmore, PhD. I hold a Bachelor’s in Biology, a Master’s in Ecology and Conservation, and a Doctorate in Biotechnology and Biodiversity from the University of Delaware. Throughout my doctoral studies, I specialized in Medicinal Plant Bioprospecting, researching species that ancestral communities used to treat a wide variety of health issues.
With over 15 years of experience in botanical research, I’ve managed scientific projects in collaboration with both universities and private enterprises, contributing significantly to studies conducted by the Southern Amazon Biodiversity Collection (ABAM) and the Tropical Ichthyology Laboratory (LIT).
My fascination with medicinal plants began in 2005, when I had the privilege of meeting the renowned researcher Dr. James L. Duke, who became a mentor and a major inspiration for my work. Since then, I’ve dedicated my career to examining the traditional uses of plants and corroborating them with scientific evidence that validates their therapeutic properties.
